You may be faced with this dilemma – so which of the two should you go for?
This article compares the advantages and disadvantages of both to help you make an informed decision.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of stainless steel utensils?
Stainless steel kitchen utensils offer a great range of advantages.
Many people (that I know of) say that it is one of their favorite utensils for cooking. However, stainless steel utensils also have some potential drawbacks.
Check the table below.
Pros: | Cons: |
---|---|
Highly durable, long-lasting, and resistant to rust or corrosion. (Depending on rate) | Material is relatively heavy |
Scratch proof | Can scratch Tefal pans |
Easy to clean | Difficult to grab when wet (may be a problem for some users). |
Withstand higher temperatures than other materials | The market seems to sell poor rated Stainless Still |
Pros & Cons of Silicone Utensils
Silicone kitchen products are present all over the marketplace and gaining huge popularity. Especially among health-conscious chefs and cooks.
These utensils are non-stick, much lighter than stainless steel, and handy to scrape sauces and they are generally easier to handle.
Pros: | Cons: |
---|---|
Heat resistant up to 600 degrees F. | Some brands are not heatproof |
Easy to clean with a non-abrasive sponge | Prone to some tiny cutes over time Depending on brand quality |
Withstand higher temperatures than other materials | The market is full of poorly rated brands |
Pliable and dishwasher-safe | |
Make sure the ones you buy, for example, spatulas, can withstand temperatures up to 600 degrees Fahrenheit making them very resistant to high temperatures.
Another positive, is it doesn’t dent or scratch your best pans.
How to care for silicone utensils and bakeware.
Silicone materials are very durable if you are careful.
When you buy a new product kindly scrub them with baking soda water and lemon. Rinse it, and if you want wash it with soap.
Repeat this every time after you finish cooking.
However, be very aware that some silicone products may not have a label displaying that they can handle as much heat as stainless steel.
Some people say that it doesn’t last quite as long over time either.
Well, that is debatable.
Additionally, some brands may contain BPA or other unhealthy chemicals which could be a potential health hazard.
Which is Better to Clean – Stainless Steel or Silicone Kitchen Utensils?
Both types of utensils are relatively easy to clean.
Good-rated stainless steel kitchen tools are dishwasher-safe, however, hand-washing may be preferable for intricate pieces, and those with delicate handles. Same for fragile or bigger items.
The silicone kitchen utensils can either be cleaned in the dishwasher or hand-washed with mild soap and warm or cold water.
Good to know that both materials, can be washed with a hard brush and a soft sponge. A good rigid brush is recommended for scrubbing heavier dirt.
Final Considerations When Choosing Kitchen Utensils
Now before choosing between stainless steel and silicone kitchen utensils, you should ask yourself some simple questions like the ones below:
Consider the user intent in your types of cooking (heat, oven cooking), price tag, the items you already have in your kitchen, and your available budget.
Many cooks prefer to have both types of utensils to cover different tasks.
Additionally, you can now find some kitchen utensils that were designed with a combination of materials for extra durability and convenience.
Ultimately, in my opinion, choosing between stainless steel and silicone kitchen tools is a personal decision that will depend on the quality and several other factors.
